Meet people
There are four ways to start a conversation
There's no random matching and no next button. Every conversation starts because one of you chose the other.
See who's online
The list shows everyone who's online and which country they're from. When more than a hundred people are on, it's grouped by country.
Search
Look for people by subject, language, gender, country or age.
Write to a nickname
If you know someone's nickname, write to them directly, even if they're offline.
Post on the billboard
Say what you'd like to talk about and let people come to you. Your post stays up for a week, and you can answer other people's posts too.
Chatting
Reply, fix typos and keep notes
You can reply to a message, correct it or take it back, and keep private notes about the person you're talking to.
When you write

Keep track of people
- Write a private note about someone that only you can see

Personas
Have up to three personas
A persona is the name, picture and profile other people see. Nobody ever sees your login. You can have several and switch between them, even in the middle of a conversation.

Pictures
Every picture arrives blurred
A picture stays blurred until you tap it, and you decide who can send you pictures.
Send and receive pictures
- Paste a picture straight from the clipboard
- Block pictures from one person, or allow one person when pictures are off
- If you report a picture, it's hidden from everyone until an admin has looked at it
- Send 10 a day for free, 25 with VIP and 50 with VIP+
Private album VIP
Keep photos that aren't on your profile. You unlock them for one conversation at a time, and you can lock them again.

Talk in rooms with more people
Rooms are invitation only, so you join one when somebody invites you. There's no public list.

There are 13 games from 12 parts of the world. You take your turn when you like, so neither of you has to be online, and they're all free.

Play a new puzzle every day
There are six, and each one is new every day and the same for everyone. Play when you like and compare your result with the day's best. No names are shown, and they're all free.
Guests
Invite a friend who doesn't have an account
Send them a link
Your friend can talk to you in their browser without signing up or installing anything. They only see your conversation and the games.
They can stay if they like
When they leave, the guest account is deleted. If they want to stay, they can turn it into a full account and keep your conversation.
Language
Talk to people in other languages
This is all VIP+, and nothing happens until you turn it on.
Two-way translation VIP+
Turn it on in the message box. You write in your language, they read it in theirs, and their replies arrive in yours. Tap a message to see the original.
Get help with the conversation VIP+
- A coach suggests what to talk about next. You still write your own messages, and it can't send anything.
- Get a draft note about the person you're talking to, and keep it or delete it
It all runs on our own hardware, so your messages never go to another company, and it only runs when you ask. We don't scan anything.
On your phone
Use the whole site on your phone
It runs in your browser, so there's nothing to download. Add it to your home screen and it opens like an app.
Turn notifications on
Do it on your first visit. Replies often come an hour or a day later, and notifications let you know.
- You see who wrote to you, but never what they wrote

- Set quiet hours so nothing wakes you at night
- Your browser only asks once, so say yes
On an iPhone or iPad
First add Smalltalk Ninja to your home screen:
- Tap Share in Safari's toolbar.
- Choose Add to Home Screen.
- Open it from there, and turn notifications on.
Now replies reach you even when the site is closed.
How we keep you safe
We keep very little, and not for long. A stolen code can't take your account, and we keep bots and spammers out.
Privacy
Nothing identifies you
When you sign up, we only ask for a nickname you make up. Your gender, age, country and languages are optional, and you can change them later. We don't ask for anything else or collect anything later. Your account is just an access code, so there's no identity behind it to leak or sell.
Nobody monitors what you write
- We don't scan or profile anything you write
- An admin only sees a conversation if somebody reports it
- We use your IP address to stop abuse, and we never store it
- We don't load fonts, scripts or files from other sites
We encrypt what we store
- Every picture is encrypted with its own key
- Every message is encrypted too
- We save every picture you upload as a new file without its camera data, and delete the original
We don't keep things for long
- Messages and pictures are deleted after 60 days, for everybody
- In an active conversation, only the older messages go
- Your persona pictures and private album stay
A stolen code can't take your account
You get three access codes, and any one of them signs you in. To replace the codes, delete the account or delete a persona, you need two of them together. So someone with one stolen code can't lock you out or delete your personas.
Until you replace your codes, whoever has one can read your conversations, write as you and delete conversations. Replace your codes and they're locked out.
Nobody can get your account back for you. Save all three codes, and keep them in two separate places.
Moderation
We keep out bots, spam and abuse
A site that doesn't ask for personal details attracts bad actors too. So we act on reports, automatically limit accounts that message too many people, and refuse the worst names and profiles before anyone sees them.
When you report somebody
- Report a person, a message or a picture right where you see it
- A reported picture is hidden from everyone until an admin has looked at it
- We copy the messages when you report them, so they're kept even if the conversation is deleted
- We tell you what we decided. The other person is told why, but never who reported them
We stop spam, bots and people selling things
- Spam reports from three accounts disable an account automatically, without waiting for an admin
- Changing name doesn't help, because strikes count against the account, not the persona
- An account can only have a few unanswered conversations at a time, so a bot that messages everyone is stopped within minutes
- Blocking someone ends the conversation at once and removes you from their list
New people can't flood you with messages
- While you're online, at most 6 unread conversations from new people reach you at a time
- The rest wait in line, and the next one arrives when you've read one
- Whoever writes to you can see that their message is waiting
- If you've been away for more than 30 minutes, new conversations don't wait in line
We stop a lot before anyone sees it
- Nicknames are unique, and we refuse look-alikes: if Quiet Otter 42 exists, nobody can take quiet-otter-42
- We refuse names that pose as staff, like support, security and bot, and also 5upp0rt and S-u-p-p-o-r-t
- We refuse anything that presents a child or an interest in children. There are no exceptions!
- We refuse anything that threatens or celebrates violence, or uses an extremist group's slogans
- We refuse anyone who sells something: services, picture trades, channels to join or contact details for other sites
- An AI on our own hardware also checks names, descriptions and room text. It can refuse a name, but it can never allow one the other checks refused
- Every wrong access code makes the next guess slower
None of this reads your conversations. Admins only see what somebody reported.
